Union Saint-Gilloise eyes World Cup star as €9m spend fuels push

🇧🇪
Union Saint-Gilloise have already spent more than €9 million on the transfer market as they move to secure South African World Cup revelation Relebohile Mofokeng. The 1.68‑metre attacker will join the Belgian side on a contract running until mid‑2030, with a club option for an additional year. Mofokeng signed from Orlando Pirates and said, “I am very happy to be here.” He added that playing in Europe and the Champions League qualifiers is a dream after a season that included a league title, his first World Cup and now this career step. Orlando Pirates confirmed a principle agreement with Union Saint‑Gilloise existed before the FIFA World Cup but the transfer remains subject to a medical exam and personal terms. The South African club said both parties postponed public announcements until after the tournament so Mofokeng could focus on the World Cup with Bafana Bafana. Union Saint‑Gilloise’s recent spending already exceeds nine million euros, having added Ondrej Kricfalusi, Darius Olaru, Ilan Hurtevent and Nikki Havenaar to the squad. The club is also in talks with ADO Den Haag over a possible deal for Milan Hokke, further expanding its recruitment drive. The 1.68‑metre left‑footed midfielder, capable of playing centrally or on the left flank, featured in three of South Africa’s four World Cup matches, including the round‑of‑16 loss to Canada. Last season with Orlando Pirates he recorded ten goals and eight assists, establishing himself as a key contributor. Transfermarkt values him at three million euros, meaning Union Saint‑Gilloise will need to meet a multi‑million‑euro fee, and the club aims to finalise the deal quickly before other suitors emerge. Outgoing players this window include Christian Burgess and Guillaume François, while Anan Khalaili is linked with a move to Serie A.
