Union Saint-Gilloise signs Romanian midfielder Darius Olaru until 2030

Union Saint-Gilloise have completed the signing of 28-year-old Romanian attacking midfielder Darius Olaru, who arrives from Steaua Bucarest on a contract that runs until June 2030, and brings 22 caps for the Romanian national team and European experience, including 13 goals and 6 assists in 40 continental matches. Olaru spent six and a half seasons at Steaua Bucarest, where he eventually became the team captain. He arrived from FCSB and expressed a desire to compete in the Ligue des Champions, a goal that aligns with Union Saint-Gilloise's upcoming European campaign. The Romanian international has earned 22 appearances for his country. In European competition he has recorded 13 goals and six assists across 40 matches, and he featured against Belgium at Euro 2024. Union Saint-Gilloise have already added four players this summer, with defenders Nohim Chibani and Nikki Havenaar joining the back line. Midfielder Ondrej Kricfalusi and forward Ilan Hurtevent completed the previous signings, making Olaru the fifth addition. The acquisition may be intended to offset a possible exit of Anouar Ait El Hadj, who has indicated interest in moving to a higher-profile league. Olaru’s versatility offers Union a player who can operate both inside and outside the penalty area. Union Saint-Gilloise will meet Steaua Bucarest in a preparatory friendly on 5 July, ten days after training resumed. The match provides Olaru an early opportunity to integrate with his new teammates. The club’s season will officially begin with the third-qualifying round of the Ligue des Champions scheduled for 4 or 5 August. Union’s management aims to solidify the squad quickly ahead of that fixture. Described as a technically refined player, Olaru never shies away from taking chances, whether from outside the box or in tight angles. His arrival signals Union Saint-Gilloise’s intent to build a competitive core for the upcoming campaign.
