Antwerp's future rests on Vandenhaute‑Alderweireld investor bid
Royal Antwerp confronts a decisive week as owner Paul Gheysens seeks additional funding to bridge a €0.5 million deficit, while a potential takeover by an investor consortium fronted by former Anderlecht president Wouter Vandenhaute and ex‑Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld this season looms.
The club's current deficit of roughly €0.5 million marks a sharp improvement on the €12 million loss recorded in the previous financial year. Nevertheless, Paul Gheysens continues to court additional investors to meet lingering cash‑flow needs linked to his construction firm Ghelamco.
Two years ago, the British speculative fund Fasanara extended a €35 million loan to Goala SRL, the vehicle in which Paul Gheysens and his son Michael sit. In exchange, Fasanara secured the club’s shares as collateral.
The repayment deadline for that loan has been pushed back, granting Gheysens a modest extension to secure a long‑term solution. This breathing room has kept the club’s options open while it searches for fresh capital.
Antwerp’s future hangs on two rival bids: Alderweireld’s heart or Vandenhaute’s cash
Among the proposals on the table is a possible acquisition by an investor group centred on former Anderlecht president Wouter Vandenhaute and ex‑national defender Toby Alderweireld. The consortium’s interest has sparked mixed reactions among supporters. Cisse Severeyns told , “If there are suitors who come because they love Antwerp, that’s always a plus. Toby has clearly shown that his heart beats for the club. You can feel it as a supporter.” His comments reflected the supporters’ appreciation for Alderweireld’s commitment. Vandenhaute added, “On the other hand, we are talking about someone who was a supporter of Anderlecht and would now take over Antwerp. How will that fit? Will it be purely business or also with the heart? Time will tell.” He questioned whether his Anderlecht background would clash with Antwerp’s identity. The club’s spokesperson stressed that “it is crucial for someone with resources to arrive. We have enjoyed fantastic years with titles, the Cup and Play‑off I appearances, but the last two seasons have clearly declined. The atmosphere remains vibrant, supporters stay top, yet the football on the pitch no longer matches that level.” He highlighted the club’s recent dip in performance despite a loyal fan base.
