Former PSV signing leads to termination of Benfica contract
Bruma's contract with Benfica, which runs until mid‑2028, is terminated with immediate effect, reports the Portuguese Record. The 31‑year‑old left‑winger, who was under contract with PSV between 2019 and 2023, continues his career at Aris Saloniki in Greece after a season without playing time.
Reasons for the purchase by Benfica
Benfica paid 6.5 million euros just a year and a half ago to release Bruma from Braga. The Portuguese club saw the 31‑year‑old as a valuable addition for the wing. The signing was viewed as an investment in an international player with experience in the Eredivisie.
The twelve‑time Portugal international was under contract with PSV between 2019 and 2023. PSV at the time paid twelve million euros to RB Leipzig for the transfer. He played 81 matches for PSV and won the cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield.
Benfica manager Marco Silva has not called on Bruma at all this season. Because he was not in the manager's plans, he received little playing time. This increased the pressure on the club's wages.
Because Bruma's salary strained the budget, Benfica opted for a contract termination. The decision was made to create financial space for other signings.
Implications for Bruma and Aris Saloniki
The termination of the Benfica contract makes Bruma immediately free to sign a new contract. He quickly puts his signature on a deal with Aris Saloniki, a club that competes at the top level of Greece.
Aris sit in fifth place in the Greek Super League after three matches. The club hopes that Bruma's arrival will strengthen its attack.
After his PSV spell, Bruma was loaned a year later to Olympiakos, after which he made a temporary move to Fenerbahçe in mid‑2022. Fenerbahçe signed him permanently six months later for €4.2 million.
