Josko Gvardiol Extends Manchester City Deal to 2031

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has agreed to a new contract that runs until the summer of 2031. The Croatian international will remain at the Etihad Stadium, ending speculation about a transfer to FC Barcelona. The news was reported by Fabrizio Romano.

FC Barcelona and Real Madrid were both linked with Gvardiol during the summer window. Barcelona had abandoned the chase for Alessandro Bastoni and identified the 24‑year‑old as a potential left‑footed centre‑half. The La Liga champions had been exploring a move before the renewal was confirmed.

Gvardiol’s previous contract was set to expire in 2028, and the departure of Pep Guardiola added further intrigue to his future. Manchester City, described as Premier League giants, had been negotiating an extension for some time. The agreement now secures the defender’s services for another three seasons.

Barcelona’s immediate priority has shifted to signing a striker to replace Robert Lewandowski, with Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez identified as the main target. Hansi Flick and Deco will reassess defensive options after the striker is secured. Consequently, Gvardiol will not join Barcelona in the current transfer window.
