Barcelona’s €7m window to re‑sign former wonderkid Jan Virgili
Barcelona are eyeing a reinforcement as they await the departure of several senior players, and the club can re‑sign former academy winger Jan Virgili for just over €7 million. The Catalan giants’ buyout clause fell from €30 million to €12 million after Mallorca’s relegation, effective 1 July.
Barcelona retained a 40 percent stake in any future transfer of Virgili and secured a right of first refusal, putting them ahead of rival clubs interested in the winger. These clauses were inserted when he left the club last summer.
Deco met with Virgili’s representatives, a meeting that underscored Barcelona’s renewed interest in the former prospect. The player’s development has attracted attention from several European teams, but the Catalan side remains in a privileged position.
Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s head coach, will have the final say on Virgili’s future. Flick is expected to evaluate the squad during pre‑season before deciding whether the winger can earn a place in the senior setup.
Internally, the club is also considering a loan spell for Virgili to continue his development while staying linked to Barcelona’s long‑term project. Such an arrangement would allow the youngster to gain experience without a permanent commitment.
Mallorca’s relegation triggered the reduction of Virgili’s release clause, dropping the valuation from €30 million to €12 million and making the transfer financially attractive for Barcelona. With the clause in effect, the actual amount required to complete the move stands at just over €7 million.
