Kompany made it more dangerous, but another Belgian saw Harry Kane

On a cold evening in October 2026, a Belgian sat in the front row of the Ballon d'Or ceremony, as Harry Kane (33) received the Golden Ball, an unforgettable moment that harks back to Kompany’s early recognition of his potential.

Early passion and first trial day

At the age of five, Harry Kane already wrote down his favourite hobby for a school assignment, after which he experienced his first trial day at Ridgeway Rovers – David Beckham’s youth club. During that day he initially put on the goalkeeper gloves, to the great shock of the goalkeepers. A coach decided to place him higher up the pitch, a decision that would change the course of his career.

Brief Arsenal adventure

At the age of eight, Kane was spotted by Arsenal scouts and joined their youth academy, but after just one season he was dismissed by the club because he did not meet the expected athletic standards. The head of the Arsenal academy explained: “Harry was a bit soft and absolutely not athletic.” This rejection gave Kane extra fuel for the rest of his career.

Breakthrough at Tottenham

Two years later, at the age of eleven, he got a second chance at Tottenham Hotspur, where he stood out for an unprecedented drive and commitment. A youth coach at the Spurs told the BBC: “He may not even have been on the stage, but his drive was unmistakable.” Kane realised early that he wanted to become England’s top scorer and a Premier League star, an ambition he would later fulfil.

The Belgian former player Paul‑José Mpoku, who played alongside Kane in the Tottenham youth between 2008 and 2011, recalls how the young striker was then “totally not fast or strong.” Mpoku said: “He realised that he had to work harder than the real top talents to reach the absolute top.” These observations underline how another Belgian saw Kane’s potential early on.

At the age of seventeen, Kane and Mpoku went on loan to third‑tier side Leyton Orient to gain their first professional experience. “It would have been easy to stay in Tottenham’s youth, but we wanted to get to know real professional football,” Mpoku said. There Kane refined every detail of his game, a development that would later define his success.

Ballon d'Or and Kompany’s vision

With Harry Kane (33) a one of the most ruthless goal‑scorers of modern football wins the Ballon d'Or, a “guarantee on goals” that is now “cloaked in gold.” Although Kompany was not the Belgian who sat in the front row, his earlier comment that he made the “monster more dangerous” is confirmed, a metaphor for Kane’s unstoppable attacking power.
