Real Madrid cease chase of Julian Alvarez

Real Madrid have confirmed they will not revive their interest in Argentine striker Julian Alvarez after the forward publicly expressed a desire to leave Atletico Madrid this summer, a move that follows the club’s earlier €150 million bid that was rejected by Atletico citing his €500 million release clause. Real Madrid were unaware that Alvarez intended to speak to the media on Monday, and had not been informed by his camp. The last contact they had with his representatives was several weeks ago, before the €150 million offer was made. The €150 million bid was turned down by Atletico Madrid, which pointed to Alvarez’s €500 million release clause. Since then Real Madrid have not submitted a second offer nor spoken to his agent. Julian Alvarez said, “I think a transfer would be the best thing for everyone, and I want to fulfil my dream.” His comment was made after the media appearance that sparked the latest speculation. It was suggested that President Florentino Perez announced a €150 million bid for a ‘top‑class’ player five days earlier without naming the target. With Atletico almost certain to reject the offer, Perez could fulfil his promise without risking the money. Real Madrid now state they have no intention of signing Alvarez and that their previous offer has expired. Their lack of contact with his representatives leaves the Argentine forward’s future uncertain. The accompanying photograph was supplied by Angel Martinez of Getty Images. Martinez’s credit appears alongside the story’s visual content.
