Rode Duivels need win vs Iran to secure easier knockout path at World Cup

A victory over Iran is now essential for the Belgium national team if they are to secure a more straightforward route to the World Cup quarter-finals. The 1-1 draw with Egypt leaves them needing a positive result against Iran and New Zealand to top their group. Group winners face one of the eight best third-placed teams in the last 16, with the most likely opponents including Mexico, South Korea, Czech Republic or South Africa. Belgium’s path changes dramatically depending on whether they finish first or second in Group A. A second-place finish would see them face the runner-up from Group D, potentially the USA, Paraguay, Australia or Turkey, before a possible last-16 tie against Argentina. The current Group A standings after two matches show Mexico on six points, South Korea on three, with Czech Republic and South Africa both on one point. If Belgium top their group, they will play one of the eight best third-placed teams in the round of 16. FIFA’s complex tiebreak system uses five criteria to rank third-placed sides: points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play record, and FIFA world ranking. The exact opponent will only be confirmed once all group matches are completed. According to FIFA’s 495 possible scenarios, the most likely opponent for a group winner from Group A is the third-placed team from Group A itself, with 314 out of 495 combinations pointing to that outcome. Czech Republic or South Africa are currently the most probable candidates from that group to finish in the top eight of the third-placed sides. A potential drawback for Belgium in this scenario is that teams from Group A receive two extra rest days before the round of 16. Other potential opponents for a group winner include Spain, Uruguay, Cape Verde or Saudi Arabia from Group H, where Uruguay currently lead with one point, followed by Saudi Arabia, Spain and Cape Verde, all on one point after the first matchday. Argentina, Austria, Algeria or Jordan are the possible opponents if the draw sends Belgium against the third-placed team from Group J. Argentina, with three points after beating Algeria, are strong favorites to top the group, with Austria and Algeria more likely to contest the third spot. France, Senegal, Iraq or Norway are the potential opponents if Belgium face the third-placed team from Group I. Norway and France currently lead with three points each, while Senegal has zero after their Africa Cup win was later overturned. Norway boasts stars such as Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard. Germany, Ivory Coast, Ecuador or Curaçao are the possible opponents if the third-placed team from Group E emerges as a potential tie. Germany and Ivory Coast currently lead with three points, while Ecuador has zero after losing to Ivory Coast on the opening matchday.
